I recently discovered something I should have tried long ago for removing shaft keys. I've always tried to pry them out with a small screwdriver (rarely works), and the take a small, sharp cold chisel, tap it into the key, and try to lever it up. Usually that eventually works, but often wrecks the key. Recently I tried the obvious thing on a badly stuck key -- grabbed it tightly with vise grips, put a bar through the handle of the vise grips and tapped it backwards with a hammer. Came right out like it wasn't even stuck at all. Henceforth, I'll always try pulling it out with vise grips before I resort to the cold chisel.
