I had better luck with O.E. type gaskets, the ones with the metal layer crimped into the fiber layer. Use two, if you need more squishyness. Back to back if they are reversible, to put metal on both surfaces. The crimping in of the metal layer prevents the gasket from blowing out in it's entirety, like what just happened to you.
