A heavy gasoline smell in the exhaust indicates an ignition problem. One, or more cylinders are not firing. Could be a fouled plug, bad wire (or cross firing wire), bad cap, even a bad rotor. I have stated the most likely first and working back to the least likley.
A "rich" carb condition would result in a black smoke exhaust. The human nose would not be able to pick up the "smell" of gasoline, you would need a gas analyzer to "smell" a "rich" condition.
