The studs on the back are insulated from the case.
#1 and 2 go to the sending unit on the gas tank.
# IG gets power from the ignition switch.
The case is grounded to the vehicle body. This is part of the metering circuit as well as the ground for the lamp.
I did the meter thing like you did. As the truck body is mounted on wood blocks or now days rubber, there is often resistance in the electrics due to a crappy ground. I ran a nice 10 gage wires from the battery + terminal to the body and the frame which helped lighting as well as the gas gage. I also ran a 16 ga wire from the gas tank to the frame for better grounding.
