Smogging a PW

I have a 1978 Dodge PW 150 with a 1972 Chrysler New Yorker 440 V8 in it. In California their is a smog exempt period the last year was 1972 to make the vehical smog exempt. I know the engine will not pass a smog inspection as it is now. Would it be smog exempt because of the year of the engine, I think it is, but how would I prove the enigine is a 72' I dont have any paper work proveing it???
