mechanical is usually more accurate. you could weld a boss to a union spliced into one of the main radiator hoses and mount a more modern electrical sender and gauge that mounts under the dash as a check on the orig. i plan on building an in engine compartment gauge cluster one day. mechanical gauges for what can be mechanical and good quality for what must be electric. in one truck i used to have i had a nice a vacuum gauge teed into the wiper line with a valve. it was a nice instant checkup on the health of the engine.
