Gordon,
Talking on the phone, most places only wanted to give me around $0.06/lb (since the aluminum body was attached to a steel frame), which I knew was very low. I talked in person to the owner of one of the recycling centers and he seemed like a good guy and was interested in what I was doing. He told me it wouldn't take his guy any time at all to tear it up and that he'd make me a good deal. I brought it up there the next day, but his guy who would tear it up wasn't there, so we had to modify the deal. I told him that based on some quick calculations I had done, I figured I had around 1000 lbs of aluminum. I asked if he'd do $0.40/lb on 1000 lbs and steel price ($0.075/lb) on the rest; he agreed.
To get to the point, I got $712 for the truck and didn't have to cut anything up. Just think if prices were the same as a year or two ago - the engine might not have cost me anything!
