Could you get more than about 8 to 1 compression out of the flathead running gasoline without without detonation? I doubt it, especially without computer controls.
So the answer regarding using gas, alcohol or lp (Tri-Fuel?) in the same flathead engine would be that you would be limited to the highest compression achievable on gasoline alone, which would mean that you are not getting the highest efficiency available using the alternative fuels.
