what made you adjust the timing alot ?
set it once to 2 deg atdc and you should be
set to go almost forever
the only connections that would really cause
a starting problem would be the battery ground connection at the engine or the hot side at the starter
if you have the foot actuated starter then
pull the switch off of the starter and check
the contact surfaces
