Back in the mid-80s, I went hiking up the Payette river in August. Camped on a gravel bar near a hot spring. The air was dead calm and smelled of smoke. The moon was full. Got up in the middle of the night to take a leak and the moon was dark orange with a weird chunk missing out of the side of it. Fine white ashes were falling out of the sky and the air was hot and still. I looked and looked at the moon and couldn't figure it out. I was sure it had been full when I went to sleep. I kept thinking maybe it was behind some tree or rock on a hill that I couldn't see in the dark. It turned out there was an eclipse of the moon that I hadn't even heard about. Combined with the smoke and ashes and the hot summer night, it was a scene I'll never forget.
