Early ones had adjustable tappets, setting is .010” intake, .020” exhaust. Later ones (in Oz anyway) used hydraulics with the rockers in a sort of cup arrangement. If the exhaust clearance was too tight on that cylinder chances are the valve is burned - have also come across one where the guide clearance was too tight, restricting the valve operation - resulted in a burned valve.
Good thinking about the distributor drive.
Tighten all cylinder head bolts to 50 foot-pounds in sequence, then repeat the procedure, re-tightening all cylinder head bolts to 65 foot-pounds.
