I second that Chris, I have tore down a lot of engines, I have torn down more than one that the reason it was in the junkyard was because of the stp. (I bought 440's out of the yards while they were still around) It wasn't uncommon to find engines with the sump totally buried in the sticky sludge you mention in your post. stp does not mix well with oil unless the motor is at operating temp and will have several miles put on while it's hot. I have found also that the lucas oil thickeners are the same crappy stuff.( the hard way, a pint of lucas in the trans, transfer case, both diffs, along with enough mobil one to fill, now I'm saving my money to do it again without the lucas) Joe will find if he goes to mobil one, that if he has leaking main seals and they are the later vitron seals they will leak worse, if it's like my truck with the old rope seals it will slow the leaks almost to a stop!! from my window of experince (borrowed phrase) Dave.
