I believe they are like like little jackhammers on dry or wet pavement and just hammer the hell out of the pavement and they increase stopping distance on wet or dry pavement. I used to drive about 40,000 miles a year, winter and summer over Snoqualmie, and Stevens Pass before I retired just using M & S tread tires w/o studs and only had to use chains about 4 times over a 30 yr period.
States like Minnesota with a lot more snow than we have don't allow them
