Quick check of chain slack is with wrench on front pulley bolt. Rock back and forth, the slack movement is the looseness in the chin. One inch is bad.

Best method is to pull #1 rocker cover, bump engine until #1 exhaust closes, and intake just starts to move. Turn engine by hand, use wrench on front pulley, or alt nut. Turn engine back and forth to get it so both valve are open just a smidgen. Cam is now centered at tdc. Damper marks should line up, also at TDC. About 20 teeth on the crank gear, so one tooth off = 18 degrees. Two teeth off = 36 degrees of jump.
