I can't recall how many cubes they were. For some reason I want to say around 900. It was in the early 80's when I was around one as a backup rig for a day. By that time most of them were gone. The guys that had been on one before warned us. About the time you get off, it will backfire after the driver shuts it off. It did and scared the poo out of everybody, even the guys expecting it. The were very common at Portland Fire up into the late 50's. Even had some early 50's 4X4 KW's with them.
The older diesel rigs were 8V71's with a special fire only 350 horse rating. Must have had Shetlands for power (especially mine) as some were not all that great. About 5 years before I retired we got a new 100' tillered aerial truck. 450,000 and change for that rig. Series 60 Detroit, 470 horse with an electronic Allison. Now that' what I'm talkin' 'bout! It didn't do as well as I thought it should considering the weight versus HP but it was a whole darn sight better than the 8V it replaced. And it whupped the engine big time climbing the 2 miles up Germantown road. With the other rig we always had to let them go first since they were so much quicker. Joe Ligatich always joked about being passed by a bicycle climbing it.
Meeting another emergency rig at an intersection can be bad. When we knew that was a possibility we would radio our approach.
