Thanks, guys. I think the hardest part of the whole thing is playing the incident back in my mind and thinking of what I could have done different, and what I wanted to do. What I am most thankful for is that my wife and baby girl were not with me when this happened.
I own several firearms, of which the newest edition is the Glock 17 .45ACP that I purchased Wednesday evening after work, that one stays in the truck with me from now on. The gun laws in Texas have changed drastically in the last couple of years, you are alllowed to carry a loaded weapon on your person from your residence to your vehicle, conceal it in your vehicle, and back home again without a permit. Also there is no more Brady Bill waiting period, if your background checks out, you take your new toy home with you, much to my delight.
I have learned a hard lesson, and now that I know the laws have changed, believe me, this scenerio will play out very different if there is a next time (I hope not). The next Concealed Carry class by my house is on the 22nd of next month, and I am already signed up.
