John, I buy spools of primary wire from the hardware store or auto parts store. I have made several harnesses in the past and follow the diagrams so I have all of the colors and gauges. I do not use cloth covered wire. I crimp all connections and cover them with heat shrink then wrap the wire with 3/4" cloth friction tape. The friction tape adds a nice retro look to the harness.
