It's a small world. What's your family name?

A month ago I was talking with a couple guys who were here in Wallace because one of their sons was wrestling here, and we got to talking and it turns out they were St Claires and they remembered my grandmother being like a grandmother to them when they were boys. They had lots of nice memories of going over to "Mrs Sherman's house" and her explaining to them about plants and animals they found. St Claires lived right next to the Sherman place on the north side. Apparently their place is still in the family. Anyway, if your uncles' families have been there for a while I'm sure I've heard their family name.

No, I didn't grow up in Molalla. My dad went to Molalla high. He always liked playing with model airplanes when he was little so his mother, who was a schoolteacher, told him he should go to college and become an engineer. That he did and he worked for Boeing in Seattle all his life.

I never saw grandpa's donkey engine. I remember him saying he bought it used from the Alakan Junk Company in Portland for $1000. That was a lot of money back then. When I knew him, he had a D3 cat that I used to climb around on, and his brother who lived with him had an old army jeep that smelled like hound dogs that they used for cougar hunting. When they got too old to use them, they sold them before I was old enough to think about buying them.

If you want to read the early history of that area, an old-timer by the name of Hardy wrote down his memoirs in a book back around 1970. I think it's called "Early History of Molalla and Nearby Areas" or something like that. He names just about everybody who lived anywhere between Estacada and Scotts Mills back in the old days, and I'm sure your kin are in there somewhere.
