That makes sense. As it happens, there are only two jack rafters and they rest on a beam pretty close to the ends that are up against the hip rafter, so I decided they really don't need any structural support against the hip rafter anyway. The high end of the roof eve sticks out 2-1/2 feet past the beam, and since the jack rafters stick out past the beam less than that, they should be strong enough without being attached to the hip rafter. The angle would be about 20 degrees (the long skinny way) which I'm pretty sure I can't even cut on my radial arm saw, and since it's just a shed and the jack rafters are well supported anyway, I'm just going to cut the ends of square and nail them to the hip rafter. If I was building a bigger building or something that had to look real good, I'd try to do it the right way. Of course a normal building wouldn't be sitting on ground that's 16" higher at one end than the other and wouldn't have two walls that meet at a 40 degree angle.
