I was tought going to full throttle during startup shuts off fuel flow to allow the engine to clear out and start.
I know that most fuel injected vehicles have kept that feature. If you happen to flood the engine somehow you can floor the accelerator while cranking and the engine will shut off the injectors.
Though I don't know if all carbs had this feature.
