Years ago it was common to lubricate between leaves and there were even tools sold for that purpose. It is a perfectly sensible idea; people were just too lazy to do it. Plus, no surprise, it attracts dirt.
Grease will not affect the heat treating.
That fellow may want to consider a slice of raw potato behind hisknee. It is good for arthritis......
