On the BMW that I owned there is a lever for activating the cruise control. It's like a turn signal control except you just flick out with the back of your hand while holding the wheel and it set the cruise control, very intuitive. The other thing is that on this BMW you don't turn on the cuise control separately and then set it, it is always "on" and you use the conrtol only to set the speed.
Once set the cruise control is active and won't turn off until you press the brake pedal.
I was driving the car and had the cruise control on and started to decelerate into a curve, except that the throttle did not disengage and the car did not slow down. A couple of seconds of panic ensued until I threw the car into neutral.
It turns out that the brake switch had failed and was not telling the cruise control to shut off.
