It is very unlikely the system is going to fail.
Usually the problem is a short between the speakers of the headset. It will be interesting to see what happened to the Air France A330 over the Atlantic. Most likely combination of a mechanical failure with inappropriate action by the pilots.
My original point is that to provide the redundancy a drive by wire system should have to be safe, it is going to cost more than the market is willing to pay.
