One tremendous problem with soda used in blasting (not the stuff in the picture) is the fragility of the soda grain. The great advance in the tubing & soda straw in minimizing the angle of intersection of the dry soda with the compressed air stream.
The phenol smell in good carb buckets is crude carbolic acid. Back in the 60s you could get some cleaners that did remove flesh from fingers if you were unlucky enough to get it on your skin.
Air/fuel explosions have nothing on air/dust explosions.
