Hi Dave,
They are the pieces that were MISSING when the axle was removed, and they lay in the bottom of the axle tube and grow moss, thus "mossing chunks"
I pulled several pieces out of my M37 diff that someone had left in on a previous repair. One was the length of a hot dog, and about as big around as my thumb. The shrapnel had done some damage but nothing terminal.
