I weld quite a bit and bought a Jackson full view about 7 years ago. No problems with it at all and it has the solar recharge(weld arc recharges it) I have NOT replaced the battery yet. It has the big square lens and plenty of room under it it you want to wear glasses.
Glen, you might want to check at your welding shop as you can get weldding mask lenses that have vision correction in them so you won't need to wear your glasses. Might be a good option for you.
When I bought my Jackson it was made in the USA. They may have changed since then but I kind of have a bad feeling about trusting my eyes to something banged out in China. This is one area I don't think the cost should be a big factor in your decision.
On flash burn it is medically called corneal abrasions. It is basically a sunburn on the back of your eye. I had them once when working in a shop close to a guy who was welding all day. I NEVER looked directly at it but the corners of my eyes still got it. Ended up going to the hospital on that one and the doc said it was a first for him.
He didn't believe me till he looked at the back of my eye and the "movie screen of my eye" if you will, was burnt only on the extreme edges. It is VERY painful. Eyes water like crazy at first, red up and then the sand thing kicks in.
I've welded for 8 hours and never had any problems with irriation. Also, always remeber to have adequete ventilation/suction to keep the fumes down. That's not good on your eyes either, let alone the rest of your body. This is specially true with stick welding.
