The 3000 mile oil change interval is total crap. Many newer cars are finally moving away from it but only because they have sensors and calculations that tell you when to change the oil based on engine usage.
The oil change intervals and ratings are designed by the oil companies with recommendations from the auto manufacturers, and naturally the oil companies do not want you changing your oil less often.
Most of Europe has oil change intervals of 10-20k miles but their oil requirements are created by the car manufacturers with recommendations from the oil companies.
