Here, we don't start worrying about roofs until there's at least 4 feet. We had 6 feet two years ago when the bus barn collapsed. Code requires 60 psf snow load in town, and more up in the hills. I heard one of the new buildings at the Friday (Mullan) was designed to carry 120 psf of snow. Last winter when they got 4 feet in Coeur d'Alene, which has rarely gotten a foot of snow before, a lot of strip mall type roofs collapsed. Even the brand new Post Falls Wal*Mart megastore had a crew up hand-mucking all the snow off their roof.
If a person has a flat roof that they're worried about, my advice is get the snow off it as soon as it quits falling, while it's still relatively easy to move. The real danger is when the inevitable rains come and add a lot of extra weight to it. Also, those push scoops will move a lot of snow faster and easier than a shovel, especially if your roof doesn't have a parapet, and you can push the snow right off the edge. Still, there's nothing fun about hand-mucking a big roof.
