Copey, I think about electricity going down a wire like water down a pipe. So in this case the hot wire from the ignition will flow power down the wire to the negative side of the coil - like the inlet to a water tank - flow goes out the positive side and on to the distributor, then on to the spark plugs and finally to the engine head which is connected to the battery earth. So positive to earth. Hope this helps you to grasp the process.
