Elecrical 'circuits' must make a full circle. hence 'circuit' which means 'circle'.
Positive side of coil to positive side of battery. The "circuit" is completed when the - side of the coil goes to the negative side of battery via grounding through the points, then through the block to the negative battery cable, back to battery.
Not quite like batteries that go + to - to + to -. It 'simplified', but is nominal rather than proper electronically accurate?
