You are correct on that part, I'm an electrician. I wouldn't run anything too sensitive, like a computer while you are on generator power. You can use a power conditioner with a computer, TV, etc. The small ones are still fairly affordable.
If it was me I would get the power conditioner if you will be without power and running on a generator for more than a day.
