its how the oil bath filter works and you must clean it that is the trouble > first on the oil bath the air is drawn in at the top > as the speeding air in heading downward in the filter the heavy particles are deposited in the bottom of the filter because of the weight of the large particles and dust , cant make the U turn at the bottom > this is the first phase of cleaning the air after it turns at the bottom air is turned up wards and then again into the inner material which contains some oil > the oil causes dust and small particles to stick (those little coils )again a filtering process and by the time the contaminated air has been screened its clean > the oil in the filter does eventually get filled with dirt and dust and will need servicing and the level oil does go down so it needs attention from time to time > big plus of a oil bath it can take on tremendous amounts of air as the air enters the entire perimeter of the top of the air filter in off road dust the engine can get all the air it needs while the filter works continuously > to service the oil bath is extensivly > having cleaned many it requires plenty of fresh clean solvent to soak the entire filter after you drain it of oil > constant swishing of the inner filter that contains the metal filters > rinse until thoroughly clean > then set filter to drain all solvent until no more solvent is in the filter and allow to dry half hour or more >DO NOT FORCE HIGH PRESSURE AIR into the inner part this will displace the tiny coils of the inner filter and could cause openings or spaces of the filler material > then i get a CLEAN pail that will hold the upper or inner filter place the inner filter in the pail cover the inner with clean motor oil soak for fifteen minutes in the oil > then remove the inner filter and place it on clean newspaper (not dirty cloths with lint) cover it allow to drain excess oil off perhaps another half hour > then install outer base of filter on the engine fill to manufactures oil line and NO MORE install the inner filter you have completed a thorough service of the filter > check base gasket between air filter and carb if ant issues there change the gasket > IT ONLY TAKES 8 ONUNCES OF ABBRASSIVE DIRT to destroy a engine thats about a mason > and if your are climing a steep enough grade to flood the engine with oil from your filter odds are you oil pump in the pan is suckin air ~ copey
