273/318-Y always internally balanced
318-LA was internally balanced through 1979 based on the engines I've had - but I've heard many conflicting stores on the change over.
The 360 was always externaly balanced.
The 340 changed to external balance in 1973.
The 413/440 went to external balance in 1972.
The 400 was always external balanced.
The 361/383 was always internal balanced.
Note - a given year vehicle could have an earlier year engine. Looking at the crank balancer or flexplate/flywheel weights/balance holes are the quick ways to tell if the engine is internal or externally balanced.
