1947 rear tailgate

I picked up a tailgate from mack hills for my 47 powerwagon , top rail measures 53 1/4" is this tailgate the correct size . inside bed dem. 54" , seems to have 1/4" gap on each side of bedsides . picked up new bed latches from vpw and when installing the new tailgate latches might have to be opened up alot more . what is my best way to solve this , thanks mike
