At least the water around here does that to tanks. Heating water makes the minerals coalesce, leaving them in the tank.
I sold a gismo that I picked up at surplus. Made by the Magna-Flux company, it used different frequencies and a detector to find the type of alloys. Great for scrap yards. But the only test I've seen them do is an acid test. Different meatls use different acids, that make a reaction of changing color. Call you local scrap yard?
