I was laying off good people I had worked with for years, the "deadwood" was long gone.
Just about everybody I worked with in those years has been RIFed one or more times at this point, and some are just done with it and retired or (like me) changed careers.
The best advice I have if you can't find a job is to see if you can get a few hourly consulting gigs. I know one guy who has three clients and makes as much as he used to at one job working half the hours for those three clients.
