I broke the lever ears off the PTO on my M37 and I removed the cover with the ears and stick welded it back together with 60 series rod. The stick welding held for two years until I broke the winch case and decided to go to a smaller hydraulic winch rather than repair the pto winch. The weld still looks good and with a little paint is almost invisible. Not long after I stick welded mine I found some sticks at the farm store for cast iron but I never have tried them. For mig welding cast iron I think I would be more worried about slowing the cooling rate than pre-heating. I think much of the problems with cast iron have to due with the stresses created whent the part cools down. I have mig welded spider gears ( Lincoln locker or Miller max traction in my case) and had a lot of problems with cracking as it cooled, one I even heard the pop as it cooled.
