What I've seen from a lifetime of watching politicians is that everybody's going to be a reformer, until they get elected. Then pretty soon they're wheeling and dealing like the good old boys, cutting back-room deals, and hiring PR flaks to tell the folks back home how great they are. If they get elected as "reformer" conservatives, within a couple years they're voting for bigger government, more perks for the big corporations, less rights for the regular people, and basically all the same stuff that they accused their opponent of doing when they were campaigning. The system seems to work because once elected, they almost never get voted out of office. People don't like congress, but they sure like they're on congresscritter, no matter what he or she does to them.
