the shift lever on my truck was loose also. turned out that the pin had worn on the inside of the chanel that it rides in on the ball of the shift lever. it had actually sheared off (the previous owner replaced with a pin from the outside). Problem is there is a chance that like mine the left overs are still in the trans. Mine ended up floating up between the drive gear and driven gear and stopped the trans. dead in its tracks.
