I use my General Radio Strobotac to calibrate the new tach's when installed. As you mentioned its valuable to see things moving really slow. I quickly pin pointed a bad Serp belt tensioner. My Strobotac has 3 ranges;
110 to 690 RPM
670 to 4170 RPM
4000 to 25,000 RPM
I find the 25,000 RPM range most useful on the old engines LOL.
