The railroad (Great Northern) used to go through Tumwater canyon until they got tired of the slides and moved it to the next valley over. In the lower half of the valley, the highway was built on top of the railroad grade, but in the upper half, the railroad was on the other side. The bridge is still there. It was converted to carry an irrigation flume at one time, but is now just a foot bridge. You can walk across the bridge and walk up the old railroad grade for a little ways but pretty soon it's all covered with rock slides, and then it goes into a tunnel that's completely blocked by slides at both ends and you have to climb around it across some cliffs. You can definitely see why they gave up on it. There are some remnants of some nicely-built stone retaining walls along the old railroad grade.
