Point to famous people: If you have to say "Don't you know who I am?" or worse yet you have to actually tell them who you are, you're really not as famous as you think you are. A lot of people are legends in their own minds. I've had a number of people tell me, "I'm surprised you haven't hard of me.", as if to say I'm ignorant. I would like to say "Life's full of surprises, isn't it?"
When someone says "I'm surprised you haven't heard of me. or "Don't you know know who I am?", what they're really doing is saying, "Sh*t, maybe I'm not as important as I thought I was." On the other hand I've also met some really down-to-Earth interesting people who I only found out later when they gave me their business card or googled their name that they were either pretty widely well-known or seriously rich. I used to have a banker who had just moved down from Alaska where she had also managed a bank. She said one of the things you learn real fast in Alaska is not to judge anyone by how they look. You could have a guy walk into the bank who looks like a total bum -- scruffy hair, dirty old work clothes, worn out boots -- and he'd be a multimillionaire in oil or fishing.
