If you remember the Eagle Hardware chain ("More of Everything), which got bought out by Lowes, you'll know why they say "Lowes" stands for "Less Of What Eagle Sold." Lowes has roughly have the SKUs that Eagle did, and most of the cutbacks were in fasteners, pipe fittings, and electrical fittings. I use Lowes and Home Depot for the commodity stuff -- lumber, plywood, drywall, basic pipe and wire, but never expect to find anything unusual there.
