The text is faint because I think it was a carbon copy (or the typewriter ribbon was about dry). You can read it fine of you magnify it (shift + in the browser). What it says is:
"Dear sir:-
In answer to your favor of June 5th regarding cost of 500 horse power Compressor, similar to the Helena & Frisco, f.o.b. cars Chicago. It would be $16,750, but upon close figuring this price might vary a little one way or the other.
Yours very truly
Rand Drill Co."
Given that the price of gold is now 50 times what it was in 1897, that works out to about $800,000 fob Chicago, without a motor.
