That may have been a "champion" beech tree.
Some states have a "champion tree competition". In my state (Maryland) there is a book with a picture of each of the biggest trees per species, and their location. I think it goes by diameter at breast height and overall tree height. Recently the biggest white oak was severely damaged in a storm, and before it was cut down some of its offspring from acorns were sprouted and sold.
