I think his problem is that even when he presses down in there with his thumb, the bolt doesn't close. But I know what you mean about the thumb. After you get it squashed a couple times, you learn to hold onto the bolt and not let it slam forward while your thumb is in there.
An M1 sure is a nice looking rifle. Parkerized steel and American walnut beats anodized aluminum and black plastic any day for looks. That's a wonderful gift. I'm glad I don't have to carry one all day, though. The Garand has to be the heaviest battle rifle ever in widespread use, which does have the benefit of probably making it the lightest-kicking .30-06 out there. I'm also a fan of ghost-ring sights, and the Garand has the best version. I've never understood why ghost-ring sights never caught on in the civilian world -- maybe just because scopes are so cheap nowadays.
