I read that issues jump generations. Meaning, your grandfather's issues affected your father; that was the source of your father's problem.
Just a theory promoted by some, and in my case further study tends to support it.
A counselor once told me that my father may have drank to shut down flashbacks to bad things his father did to him. His father was quite physically abusive of his wife. The kids had to witness all that.
Much of my life I absolutely hated alcohol. I still have little use for it.
