When Mobile 1 first came out, they advertised 25,000 miles between changes. Studies during WW2 on synthetic verses crude resulted in synthetic lasting 7 times longer, most of it used in planes, but also found it's way to truck engines. Studies of engine wear using Mobile 1 have resulted in no wear after 200,000 miles. Higher detergent and lubrication prperties.
I use Mobile 1 15-50 in the engine because it's just a better oil over crude, and I prefer the higher detergent action. I also change the oil once a year, since it's good for 15,000 miles and I don't drive that in a year with the truck.
If you're consider synthetic, go with anyone that makes 100% synthetic, none of the blended crap.
I have used synthetic in the trans and TC but found it too light even at 140W, so now I use gear oil 75W-140W. Makes cold shifting easier and thickens nice as the temp rises. You really don't need synthetic in these units.
I have used synthetic as well in both our cars since they were new. They are still going strong at 230,000 and 329,000
