I think you will find the widths of frames and axles are going to be way different from old to new. You are not going to find disc brakes upgrades for those old axles. Thats why I suggested using a Ram chassis if you just want the look factor or go find you a bigger truck to swap the cab over to it. You are going to have to fab everything that you want to do to this 1.5 ton. You are not certain the motor will fit. The radiator will cool it. How to plug everything in.
A bigger truck bought and used for the frame makes better sense to me. You already got the rolling chassis with brakes. All you got to do is attach the cab to it. With the old 39 you are gonna have to tear everything else apart and try and make it work. Yuoi simply are not gonna buy some junkyard axles off a bigger truck and roll them under the 39. I would hate to even think what a new axle from a 4500 or 5500 truck would cost to even buy right now. New wheels and tires as well. Theres plenty of 70's and 80's IH or Ford 2-3 ton tucks out there you could pick up cheap cheap and convert it.
I wouldnt use an old gas tank for the diesel system. You might as well use a new setup. Return lines and or pressurized system. It would hold more too.
Heres a COE that was at our show a year back .It was on a Ram 3500 chassis.
