That makes sense with an A-frame because then you'd drive it off of a rear PTO with a sprocket on a shaft that's parallel to the bed, like on the pole-setting trucks, shop vans, and contact maintenance trucks.
It also sounds like this unit is indeed a copy of a Braden winch; not an MU-2, but one that shares most parts with one.
